Poll Everywhere

What is the tool?

According to Poll Everywhere, “On the surface, Poll Everywhere is a simple application that works well for live audiences using mobile devices like phones. People participate by visiting a fast mobile-friendly web page for your event, sending text messages, or using Twitter. Instructions are displayed on-screen. The poll that is embedded within the presentation or web page will update in real time. Advanced uses include texting comments to a presentation, texting questions to a presenter, web voting, and SMS interactivity in print, radio, and TV.”

How could you use it in the classroom?

  • assessments
  • pre-learning check
  • Check for understanding after a difficult lesson
  • Do Now! activity when students enter class (ex: What did you do this weekend? How do you feel about the upcoming test?)
  • Make classroom decisions (ex: What should we name our class pet? How much more time do you need on the paper?)Assign as a homework assignment (ex: Answer the poll by midnight)
  • Keep track of student progress (ex: Text “Done” to the poll when you are finished

How does it support the curriculum?

Poll everywhere supports the curriculum by enhancing and developing assessment. Poll Everywhere creates an opportunity for teachers to incorporate digital citizenship right into the classroom by allowing students to participate right from their own personal device such as; a phone or students can participate through computers, I-Pads, etc. that the school has. With digital citizenship becoming part of the curriculum it is an excellent and easy way to enforce digital citizenship and asses students at the same time.

How might it be used to support digital citizenship?

Animoto

What is the Tool?

Animoto is an online video editing and creating tool. It allows the user to create a video (length depends on which version of animoto being used) by compiling pictures, recordings, text and music. Themes can be applied to each video that can be chosen from a vast library of themes (depending on version of animoto).

How can it be used in the Classroom?

Animoto has various ways it could be incorporated into a classroom. To begin with the 30 second videos can be used as a visual hook for the beginning of a lesson. This intro video will allow teachers to recap their previous lessons or introduce new topics to their students. Animoto can then be used as a presentation tool allowing a classroom to move away from the traditional powerpoint or poster presentations.

How does it support the Curriculum? 

In regards to the curriculum Animoto is able to be used for several outcomes. Looking at the outcome we have chosen to highlight — CR 6.1 — students would be able to take sections of the readings done in class and create a video highlighting major events/changes to characters.

How may it support Digital Citizenship?

When it comes to supporting digital citizenship Animoto does a great job. The tool allows educators to make the internet a constant part of the classroom. Manufacturing videos that are located online creates a platform for an educator to talk about internet safety and what students would to be traced back to them.

Bitstrips for Schools

What is the tool?

The tool I am examining is Bitstrips for schools.

How could you use it in the classroom?

This tool can be used in most subjects for students to do certain activities in a way that utilizes technology. Usually computers or some form of multimedia device is available for students to use in the classroom.

How does it support the curriculum?

It holds many curriculum connections in many different subjects.  It is very easy to run through it with the curriculum open and find activities that relate to the area you are trying to hit.

How might it be used to support digital citizenship?

We can publish all comics to the bitstrips page which allows other classes to see samples of your work.  It helps to show students how to responsibly put themselves out into the digital community.  The avatar is a great way to give the students a visual of themselves actually being put out into the digital world.
